Am I a Candidate for LASIK?

While laser eye surgery is a popular choice, it isn’t the right fit for everyone. To qualify for a procedure like LASIK, you must meet certain requirements, including:

  • You must be at least 18 years old
  • Your prescription must be stable with no prescription changes in the last year
  • Your corneas need to be thick enough for surgery
  • Your eyes must be healthy and free from infection or conditions such as glaucoma, AMD, and diabetic retinopathy

During your consultation, we’ll assess your candidacy. We look for underlying conditions that might affect your healing or visual outcome, so we can advise you accurately.

Types of Laser Vision Correction Surgery

Modern technology has led to the development of several different procedures, including LASIK, PRK, and SMILE, that can correct vision problems. These surgeries use a laser to correct refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism

Depending on your eye structure and lifestyle, one specific method may be more suitable than another. During your consultation, we can discuss the method that we’d recommend for you, as well as a referral to a local eye surgeon if you decide to pursue the surgery.

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is the most common form of laser vision correction. It involves creating a thin flap on the cornea to reshape the tissue underneath with a precision laser.

Most patients experience a fast recovery, often returning to normal activities within 24 hours. It may take 2 to 3 months for your eyes to heal completely at your new prescription.

This procedure is generally ideal for individuals with a stable prescription and sufficient corneal thickness.

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) was the first type of laser eye surgery and remains an excellent option, especially for those with thinner corneas.

Instead of creating a flap, the surgeon removes the outer layer of the cornea before reshaping the surface with a laser. The eye surgeon then places a bandage contact lens to protect the eye and promote healing.

Recovery from PRK takes a bit longer than LAISK. Usually, functional vision returns after a few days and is fully stabilized around 3–6 months after surgery.

Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) is a newer, minimally invasive procedure where a small piece of tissue is removed through a tiny incision to correct vision.

Because there is no flap created, the recovery is typically quick, and there is often a lower risk of post-surgery dry eye symptoms. This procedure is primarily used for nearsightedness and is ideal for patients seeking a less invasive surgical experience.

What Is Included in a Laser Eye Surgery Consultation?

A consultation is a comprehensive assessment that goes beyond a standard eye checkup. We perform eye health checks to verify that you don’t have any underlying conditions and that your cornea is in good condition. We’ll also confirm that your prescription has been stable for at least a year.

A key part of this visit is a discussion between you and your optometrist to set realistic expectations. It is important to understand that while many patients achieve significantly clearer vision, the procedure may not eliminate the need for vision correction entirely.

In some cases, you may still require glasses for certain tasks like nighttime driving or reading, though the procedure should significantly reduce your overall prescription.
